Type ‘definition of photography’ into Google and the results will look something like below.
pho•tog•ra•phy/fəˈtägrəfē/
Noun: The art or practice of taking and processing photographs.
As a definition this is accurate, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.
To me, photography is all about seeing something beautiful/breathtaking/awe-inspiring in front of you and attempting to capture that moment on your chosen medium, be it film, or more likely today, digital.
Photography means searching out new and unusual places or looking for a new angle to get that unique/magical image. It can mean numerous trips out, only to get to a place and be confronted with the unexpected, which simply can’t be worked ‘round. Oh well, back to the drawing board, or Google Maps!!
Even after you have found that new and unusual place, it means sitting for hours waiting for the light to be perfect, or going home and trying again another day. Of course we are all lucky sometimes and it all falls into place without much effort, if only.
So as a photographer, the noun at the top which describes what I, and many others do is correct, just simplified somewhat.
Hopefully, as you browse the images in the ‘Gallery’ you will think about and appreciate the effort and dedication that has gone in to each image, and also the beautiful/breathtaking/awe-inspiring image in front of you.
So, what does photography mean to you, hopefully that I’ve done all the hard work and all you have to do is enjoy the image.
